Performance

Every Forester model is powered by a single powertrain, a 2.5-liter flat-four-cylinder engine that outputs 182 horsepower and 176 lb.-ft of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and Subaru's trademark all-wheel-drive system are attached to this engine. This setup allows the Forester to tow around 1,500 pounds of cargo, though this is increased to 3,000 pounds in the Wilderness trim. According to the EPA, the Forester averages about 26 miles per gallon in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

Design

As a rugged SUV, the Subaru Forester can tackle any terrain, be it mud, snow, or simply a slick road. Step inside the cabin, and you'll discover a more straightforward design free of frills but with good visibility and driving position.

Along with a nicely finished cabin with leather seats, door panels, and dash, there's also a textured plastic trim with a gloss-black plastic on the center stack. There are also chromed and matte-metallic plastic trims throughout.

The back seat is also spacious, capable of accommodating adults, along with plenty of carry-on suitcases behind the back seat. In total, there are 39.4 inches of legroom and 37.6 inches of headroom in the second row and 26.9 cubic feet of space behind the seats. Fold the seats down, and you expand the cargo area further to an impressive 69.1 cubic feet.

Technology

All Forester models have a touchscreen infotainment system that uses Subaru's latest Starlink interface. Trims like the Base, Premium, and Sport come standard with a 6.5-inch display, but a larger eight-inch monitor is optional on the Sport and standard on the Limited and Touring.

In the front of the touchscreen, there are two USB ports for charging your phones, and for an added cost, two more can be added to the back of the display so that rear seat passengers can do the same. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability are both standard and can provide turn-by-turn directions broadcast from the user's device. But, an optional navigation system is available if you want more visual cues. Additionally, onboard Wi-Fi with a 4G LTE data connection is standard on all but the base Forester.

Safety Features

As you cruise down the highway or across the trails, the Subaru Forester will ensure you stay safe thanks to its EyeSight suite of camera-based driver-assistance features. These features include automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. For more advanced features like blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning or evasive steering assist, you'll need to purchase the Sport trim or a higher model.
