First Generation (1998-2002)
Sharing its platform with the Impreza and using an engine from the Outback, the 1998 to 2002 Subaru Forester brought a new model to the streets of Brewster, NY. Available in two trims with standard all-wheel drive, the Forester provided plenty of standard features such as power windows, anti-lock brakes, and multi-way adjustable seating.
Second Generation (2003-2008)
Building upon the success of the first generation, the 2003 to 2008 Subaru Forester models featured two available engines, up to 64 cubic feet of storage space, and plenty of premium features. The 2004 Forester XT launched with a 210-horsepower turbocharged BOXER® engine, developing a cult following for its incredible acceleration that outperformed sports cars at the time.
Third Generation (2009-2013)
Completely leaning into the SUV design, the 2009 to 2013 Subaru Forester increased in size for comfort, safety, and visibility. Drivers near Norwalk had the option to receive leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and tire-pressure monitoring on higher trims. In addition, the turbocharged model received a power boost to 224 horsepower from its 2.5-liter BOXER® engine.
Fourth Generation (2014-2018)
Offering a futuristic driver assist technology known as EyeSight®, the 2014-2018 Subaru Forester provided a refreshing take on a popular model. Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind-Spot Monitoring became available features, while X-MODE traction control became standard on automatic transmission models. The Forester XT received an upgraded 2.0-liter engine that produced 250 horsepower through a CVT (continuously variable transmission).
Fifth Generation (2019-2022)
Built on the Subaru Global Platform, the 2019-2022 Subaru Forester SUVs are among the most advanced Subaru models ever built. Ditching the turbocharged engine in favor of a revised engine that produced 182 horsepower, the Forester continues to provide excellent efficiency with up to an EPA-estimated 33 MPG Highway. In addition, the Forester continues to provide impressive safety ratings, with every model from this generation receiving the IIHS TopSafetyPick+ award.
